“For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of sound mind.” 2 Timothy 1:7
This morning, I woke with all intentions of opening my Bible and taking my anxiety to God. But instead, I opened my phone. And I read update after update, article after article of people crippled by fear. People turning against one another, fear crippling the sound minds and decisions of people, people acting in selfish ways due to the unknown.
You see, I work in health care. And I am a single mom. So the weight of what is happening right now around the world hits especially hard. I laid in bed the other night with debilitating anxiety thinking about what if something happened to me. What would happen to my daughter? What would my parents do? Why is this happening?
After making myself get out of bed, I realized that turning to social media and continuing to watch the media over and over was doing nothing but harming my thoughts. Harming my heart. So, I did the only thing I could do. I took it to God. And you know what? He has a lot to say about anxiety and fear.
God Is With Us
“Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” Isaiah 41:10
You see, no matter what we are going through- be it a loss of a job, an injury, or a pandemic threatening the world, God has not left us. He is right here with us. He promises that he will NEVER leave us. So, when you feel overwhelmed and anxious due to fear, reach your hand up for Him. He is with you.
God Cares about You
“Cast all your anxieties on Him, because He cares about you.” 1 Peter 5:7
Take it to God. Let it out. Pray to Him. Cry out to Him. Let Him know how you feel. It is OK to have anxiety and fear during this uncertain time, but let us never forget that God cares for us. He created YOU. He designed your life with a purpose. Do not allow the problems of this world to derail you from your purpose. Maybe you were called to be a mother. Well, now you have all the time in the world to be with your kids. Maybe you were called to be a missionary. The world is listening. Right now. You can tell others about the goodness of God from the comfort of your home. (Thank you social media.) Maybe you are a celebrity. What a platform you have right now. Thousands of people may be looking to you for guidance and influence. Use that. God cares enough about you to have given you unique gifts to get you through this time.
God Knows that You are Sad
“The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit” Psalm 34:18
God knows your heart. He knows you are scared and sad. Maybe you have lost someone during this time. Maybe you are grieving. You are not grieving alone. God grieves when you grieve. He never wants to see His people sad or hurting, but it is unfortunately part of this world that we live in. But He promises to be with us even in those hard times. So, find peace in knowing that even if you are in your bed crying, alone, you are never alone.
Our Ultimate Home is with Him
“He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more. No more morning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.” Revelation 21:4
If you are a Christian, then you know that this world is just our temporary home. All of the things we experience here on earth will be wiped away when our last day comes and we go to our heavenly home. God has promised us that on that glorious day, there will be no more sorrow and no more pain. That we will feel joy and peace like we have never known.
No one knows when the last days of Earth are coming, but it feels as though they are getting closer and closer. Hold on to the fact that God is with us, always, even to the end and will be with us forever in eternity. When you are starting to feel overwhelmed, put your phone down, turn off your tv and open your Bible. Take your worries to Him in prayer. Let Him know how you are feeling. I promise He hears you. He can bring you a peace that you can not find anywhere else.
